The CVMA Pet Food Certification Program
How can pet owners tell if their pet is getting the proper nutrients from
the dog or cat food they buy?
One sure way is to look for the seal: that's the certification seal of the
Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and its Pet Food Certification
Program.
What does the seal stand for?
It means your pet is getting optimum nutrition, including all the nutrients
required by your dog or cat to:
- achieve normal growth and development
- achieve genetic potential
- maintain health
- breed efficiently and raise normal healthy litters
- stay active
Why should pet owners trust the seal?
Pet owners can have confidence in the CVMA seal because the Pet Food
Certification Program ensures that manufacturers consistently meet established
nutritional standards in order to earn the CVMA certification. The CVMA
Pet Food Certification Program is completely independent from any pet food
maker or retailer. In fact, the Program has been providing impartial,
third-party testing and ongoing monitoring for a quarter of a century.
For these reasons, pet owners know pet foods that carry the seal can be
fed to their pets with confidence.
How does the certification process work?
- Pet food makers participate voluntarily in the Pet Food Certification
Program and pay the cost of testing. It is important to note they cannot
buy certification by paying the cost of testing: it is no guarantee of
certification or keeping certification.
- The pet foods and the makers' production facilities undergo a rigorous
process to determine if they meet the CVMA's strict standards for composition,
digestibility and palatability.
- Analyses and feeding trial results are forwarded from accredited
independent laboratories and facilities directly to the CVMA, which makes
the final decision as to whether the pet food meets the standards and can
carry the seal of certification.
- Pet food makers who earn the privilege of carrying the seal must undergo
ongoing testing to ensure they continually meet the Program standards.
